Choosing a grading company means balancing cost, speed, resale value, and what the holder tells buyers about the card. Here is how the four major services compare for sports cards in 2026.

The four major grading services

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)

PSA is the largest and most widely recognized sports card grader. A PSA 10 typically commands the strongest resale premium in the modern market, especially for basketball and football rookies.

Strengths: Strongest resale liquidity for modern mainstream cards. Simple 1–10 scale that buyers understand instantly. Large population report database for scarcity research.

Considerations: Higher-tier submissions can take longer during volume spikes. Grading fees are mid-to-high compared with budget alternatives.

Best for: Modern rookies, vintage mainstream sets, and cards where resale premium matters most.

SGC (Sportscard Guaranty Corporation)

SGC has grown rapidly among vintage and modern collectors who want a clean, consistent holder and fast turnaround. The black tuxedo holder is easy to spot at shows.

Strengths: Competitive pricing and generally fast turnaround. Strong reputation for vintage baseball. Simple, consistent holder design.

Considerations: Modern card resale premiums often trail PSA 10 in hot rookies. Smaller population database than PSA.

Best for: Vintage cards, pre-war baseball, and collectors who value speed and holder aesthetics.

BGS (Beckett Grading Services)

BGS uses subgrades for centering, corners, edges, and surface. A BGS 9.5 with all subgrades at 9.5 or better is called a "Black Label" and is highly prized by some buyers.

Strengths: Subgrades reveal why a card earned its overall number. Black Label 9.5 carries strong collector prestige. Established name among longtime hobbyists.

Considerations: Turnaround has fluctuated historically. Some modern buyers prefer PSA holders for liquidity.

Best for: Modern cards where subgrade detail matters, and collectors chasing the BGS Black Label.

CGC (Certified Guaranty Company)

CGC is best known for comic books and TCG cards, but its sports card division has expanded. It often markets itself on fast turnaround, clear holder design, and crossover services.

Strengths: Fast, predictable turnaround in many recent cycles. Clean, modern holder. Crossover service for cards already graded elsewhere.

Considerations: Sports card resale premiums are still catching up to PSA and BGS in many segments. Smaller market share in traditional sports.

Best for: TCG crossover collectors, budget-conscious submissions, and cards where speed matters more than resale premium.

How to decide

When grading is worth it

Grading makes sense when the expected increase in value exceeds the grading fee plus shipping and time cost. It rarely pays off for base cards or low-demand commons. High-grade rookies, vintage hall-of-famers, and condition-sensitive cards are the usual candidates.

Important caveats

• Turnaround times change with submission volume. Check each company's published turnaround before sending cards.
• Fees vary by declared value, turnaround speed, and membership level.
• Grading does not guarantee a profit. A lower-than-expected grade can reduce value.
